Alexej von Jawlenski was an older man compared to the other artists involved when he took on the fauve and expressionist style of painting early in the 20th century. His works of this period are going for very high prices. Schokko sold for 9,428,500 GBP in Feb08.
His later works are nowhere near as valuable. But to my mind these later works are equally as good and sometimes better.
Part of the effect and originality of these late works lies in their small size. They are closer to abstraction, but no less effective for this.
Grosse Meditation 1936 (25x19cm) sold for 22,500 GBP at a Christie’s auction Feb1o. Some lucky person got an absolute bargain.
